Hermes Hills

Two residences stepping down a Cypriot hillside, turned towards the valley and the mountains beyond.

01The project

Quality rather than ostentation. Simple forms, the materials of the Mediterranean, and a constant dialogue with the land.

Hermes Hills is a pair of private residences to be built on a slope at Stroumpi, in the hills of the Paphos District. Designed by Saint & Saint Studio in cooperation with DANA Arquitectos, the houses are composed of low, simple volumes, finished in a careful selection of materials — honey limestone, mineral render, polished concrete, wood and glass — made to feel unmistakably of Cyprus, and to outlast any passing trend.

Inside and outside are treated as one: courts, terraces and gardens are part of the house, not additions to it. The idea, in the studio’s own words, is a timeless elegance to be enjoyed without hurrying.

02The place

A hillside above an open valley.

Cyprus

The third-largest island in the Mediterranean, at the sea’s eastern edge — long summers, mild winters, and a light that defines its architecture.

Paphos District

The island’s west: a coast of harbours and archaeological sites, and behind it a hinterland of villages, vineyards and hills.

Stroumpi

A village in the hills inland from Paphos. Distances are shown in a straight line from the plot, on Hermes Hills.

The plot

A slope with a fall of about five metres, looking out over a cultivated valley towards the mountains. Parcel 348, 1,853 m², is being divided into two plots — one for each house.

03The idea

The house follows the land.

Rather than impose a platform on the slope, the design reads it — and breaks each house into pieces until it fits.

01The landAfter “The Idea”, Saint & Saint Studio
  1. 01The land

A steep plot, with a fall of about five metres.

Rather than level it, the design uses the slope. The two houses overlap gently, private from each other without losing the landscape — and the contour lines set the orientation, towards a horizon of fields, native vegetation and mountain ridges.

  2. 02The programme

Two long houses, each open on both sides.

The upper house, on the highest ground, is the larger of the two. Both are elongated and dual-aspect, so that their principal rooms open towards the horizon.

  3. 03Fragmentation

Each house is broken into pieces.

A simple, almost modular structure keeps the building rational, and leaves the architects free to size and place each volume — adaptable, without losing coherence.

  4. 04Adaptation

The pieces settle into the ground.

Turned and offset, the volumes follow the terrain rather than imposing on it. The uneven ground does the work of privacy: no direct views between the houses, and no walls built for the purpose.

In section

Two houses, one slope, two horizons.

The plot falls about five metres. Villa Idalia sits below the sightlines of Villa Allegra, and both roofs are planted. With the planting between the two plots, Villa Allegra looks down on a green roof and treetops, and Villa Idalia up at greenery: each house looks out over the valley, and neither sees into the other. Both pools are infinity pools, open to the view.

04Residences

One plot. Two houses, each entirely its own.

The parcel is being divided in two. Each house has its own entrance, pool, gardens and outlook — and the slope keeps them out of each other’s view.

How the houses work.

Pavilions for living and for sleeping, set around terraces and water. Select a space to see what it is for, and how large it is.

One room for cooking, eating and sitting — a kitchen island, a table for six and a pair of sofas — opening to the terrace and the pool.

06Take a closer look

Honey limestone, polished concrete, wood and glass.

Few materials, used with restraint: the honey limestone Cyprus has always built with, concrete polished to a soft sheen, warm wood and glass that keeps out the heat — softened by native planting. Point at any of them to look closer.

Elevation · Schematic, after the Basic Project (DANA Arquitectos). Materials as indicated by the architects.

07Living

A constant connection with the exterior.

In a climate like Cyprus’s, the house is not a shelter from its surroundings but an extension of them. Courts, terraces and gardens are rooms of the house — and the vegetation is part of the design, not decoration.

Morning

The day starts outside.

The table stands in the court between the pavilions — breakfast is taken in the open air, not at a kitchen counter.

Midday

Shade, then stillness.

Timber pergolas and planted terraces temper the light at the hottest hour, and the house falls quiet.

Afternoon

Water and limestone.

A long pool along the terrace, loungers on the warm limestone, and the valley opening out below.

Evening

Light spills outward.

The pavilions glow through their large windows, and dinner moves outdoors for as long as the evening lasts.

08Location

Stroumpi, in the hills of Paphos.

Inland from the coast, among villages and vineyards — near the town, the beaches and the airport, and far enough from all three.
